Artist Statement: Over the years I have very much enjoyed working with fiber and recycled materials and creating abstract sculptures that reflect human and organic life and experience. My recent work is based around the joy we experience from family and relationships.

 There are studies on the science of joy and happiness and one consistent result from this study was that multiple circles in an abundance of colors bring joy. Think of a bouquet of flowers, sprinkles on a cupcake or a bunch of balloons. These small details are smile bringers and joy givers. This hit home with my own work. I was already drawn to incorporate circles in the shape of each fiber work but now I wanted to add buttons, polka-dots, and rings to all my fiber work.

 This idea lends itself to family, friends, and relationships. From hugs and wedding rings to circular arguments and round-trip flights there is something so circular about our lives and relationships together. And the joy comes from the small details, mom’s homemade pineapple upside down cake, a grandmother’s ring, or a niece’s Sit ‘n Spin. These are the moments and memories that I am trying to capture with each of my fiber works.
