Artist Statement
I make objects out of clay that are representations of familiar
objects found in everyday environments. These representations are
meant to be perceived as factual objects. The representations are
displaced from their normal context and put them in juxtaposition
with other representations to create poetic and conceptual
juxtapositions inferring meaning. Interpretations of the meanings
transform the objects into metaphors creating symbolic narratives.
They ask to be reinterpreted and understood as false
interpretations, by appearing as factual and reveal falsifications.
This is achieved though making things like an envelope curl, as if
it were a leaf, or a table to crack and slump. These falsifications
allow the objects to be understood as clay. They can be understood
as clay because of the unnatural way they act through the natural
way clay acts in response to gravity, moisture, heat, ect. The
falsifications reflect perceptions of the symbolic narratives and
experiences. They are the simplest explanations of experiences and
can be considered as tricks.
All of my sculptures can be described like the most basic magic
trick. My sculptures rely on multiple levels: the assumption of the
objects as real, revelation of objects as representations,
realization of representations as clay, clay representations as
symbols, symbols as metaphors, metaphors relating to narratives,
and narratives as incorrect interpretations of experiences.
