Water Street Studios offers a variety of classes for all ages and experience levels. It is our philosophy that everyone from preschoolers to seniors can use art in their lives. Classes run on a trimester schedule and are staffed by professional and working artists. Water Street Studios, Batavia is home to the School of Art and our second location, Printlab, is located in St. Charles and houses printmaking facilities.     Does your child like to play in the mud? This class is designed for children interested in exploring the tactile wonders of clay.  They will explore the three fundamental techniques for creating with ceramics and learn how to become masters of their own motor skills.  Each class will consist of a one-hour guided lesson, wherein each child will create the instructed piece.  The remaining time will be open for each child to develop and create their own art work under technical supervision to ensure its success.  All clay, glazes, and firings included.

    “Take My Word For It!” Is offering creative writing classes for elementary and middle school kids this summer at Water Street Studios!     Tinker!Create and Destroy!  7-13 suggested age

    Did you know that girls are often discouraged to use simple hand tools or engage in play that involves getting dirty and greasy? This camp will have girls tinkering and creating with tools and gadgets in a safe and supervised environment. Girls will participate in activities that include using simple tools such as hammers and nails, wrenches and pliers, nuts, bolts, and gears. The class participants will construct a toolbox, deconstruct everyday objects to discover how they work, have fun with gears and grease, make a moving sculpture using a simple motor, and use all their new skills and tinker kits to create robots out of recycled materials. Teach a girl to tinker & empower her for life!

    DaVinci Reinvented

    Ages 7-11

    Endless possibilities await as you use your imagination to create new inventions out of odds and ends.  In addition to being an amazing artist Da Vinci was an architect, musician, mathematician, engineer and INVENTOR. You will learn about Da Vinci and create some expert technical drawings and then work to turn those ideas into three dimensional pieces using a variety of materials including found objects, metal, cardboard, wood, and more. Don't forget to bring a bag lunch!

    You will learn to make lampworked glass beads using the old Venetian technique of layering molten glass on a rod to form a glass bead. There will be a brief discussion on safety, tools, and technique, followed by a demonstration. Students will then have time to explore their own creativity manipulating the glass to create a one of a kind handmade glass beads with the guidance of the instructor. Each student will be supplied with a special Nortel Minor glass working torch, safety glasses, various colors of Moretti soft Italian glass and all the tools needed. Please bring note taking supplies.

    Ages 12+

    Linocut is a variant of woodcut in which the relief printing matrix is made of softer linoleum.  A design is drawn onto the surface which is then cut with gouges, tools and chisels.  The uncarved areas yield a mirrored image when printed.  Students will learn to create imagery on linoleum, pink erasers, and flat rubber discs which will all be used to experiment in print collage.  Required: Speedball Lino Cutter Set.

    Ages 16+

    Harness the power of acid to create your next art work! To start, a zinc plate is covered in a waxy acid-resistant ground. A scribe is used to remove the ground, exposing the bare metal. Etching acid eats the exposed zinc which creates grooves that will hold ink. Students will learn the intaglio method of printing their unique etched plate onto paper.

    What do tin foil, feathers, tape, cardboard and sting all have in common? They can be used to create texturally and tonally rich edition of prints. Using these found materials, students will create one of a kind collagraphs and learn to print them using both relief and intaglio methods.

    In this class, we will focus on the process and techniques that can be used to arrive at a suitable likeness of your subject.  "Suitable" can a realistic, abstract or stylized representation that communications the essence of a person you are painting.  We will talk about ways to see your subject in order to make this an easier task to achieve!  Using oil paints, through underpainting and working from general to specific, we will learn to arrive at our goals.  Please come to class with the required supplies and a reasonable sized, clear photograph of your subject.  We will cover some of the basics of color mixing and oil painting techniques, but previous experience with this is helpful, since it will allow more time to achieve the desired outcome!  Please see the online supply list for Oil Painting and Oil Painting Techniques to view required materials.  Or view it HERE.

Participants will explore traditional and alternative styles in oil painting while  developing an understanding of basic drawing and composition skills.     Steven Hill Glazing Workshop


    "Steven Hill has been a professional studio potter since 1974. Steven's work is exhibited and sold in nationally juried shows and is featured in many ceramics books. He has conducted over 200 workshops throughout the United States and Canada and has written numerous articles for Ceramics Monthly, Pottery Making Illustrated, and Studio Potter, the most recent of which is, “An Approach to Single Firing – Further On”, in the January 2006 Ceramics Monthly."

    The goal of this workshop is to help you get the most out of your ^6 glazes. We will be using your own pieces in this workshop. The basic technique of spraying glazes will be demonstrated and advanced theories of layering and blending will discussed.

    Schedule for 3 day glazing workshop:

    Day 1: Steven will throw a few pots, assemble and quick dry them.

    Day 2: There will be a lecture on spraying and a demonstration of the techniques involved. Participants will be glazing their own pots in the afternoon and loading the kiln to fire overnight.

    Day 3: There will be more discussions on spraying techniques and the equipment needed to setup a spraying studio. Ideas for further experimentation after the workshop will be discussed. Finally the kiln will be unloaded and the results will be reviewed.
