Water Street Studios offers a variety of classes for all ages and experience levels. It is our philosophy that everyone from preschoolers to seniors can use art in their lives. Classes run on a trimester schedule and are staffed by professional and working artists. Water Street Studios, Batavia is home to the School of Art and our second location, Printlab, is located in St. Charles and houses printmaking facilities. We look forward to seeing you around the Studios or in the PrintLab. Whatever your passion, or curiosity, we've got something for you.

    Water Street has a unique teen program that is all-inclusive and welcomes any area student, 7th through 12th grade, who is interested in the arts.  Art Flow participants explore welding, ceramics, drawing, print making, jewelry design, sculpture, photography, painting and mixed media in a creative environment under the guidance of visiting professional artists. Additional cultural enrichment experiences are offered on a quarterly basis.
    Due to generous support from our community, Water Street offers FULL financial scholarships for those in need of assistance.

    This is an Introductory “tour” of lampwork beadmaking. You will learn to make lampworked glass beads using the old Venetian technique of layering molten glass on a rod to form a glass bead. There will be a brief discussion on safety, tools, and technique, followed by a demonstration. Students will then have time to explore their own creativity manipulating the glass to create a one of a kind handmade glass beads with the guidance of the instructor. Each student will be supplied with a special Nortel Minor glass working torch, safety glasses, various colors of Moretti soft Italian glass and all the tools needed. Please bring note taking supplies.

    In this six (6) segment class, you will learn to make lampworked glass beads using the old Venetian technique of layering molten glass on a rod. Students will learn basic bead shapes, layering of glass, dots, basic flower designs, frit (the use and  making of), stringer pulling and how to make and pull twisty canes. Each student will be supplied with a special Nortel Minor glass working torch, safety glasses all the tools needed for use in shaping glass.     In this intensive one-day workshop we will begin to explore the possibilities of the encaustic medium.   Encaustic painting is the process of using wax based paints that are heated to a molten state, applied while liquid and fused with a heat source between each layer of paint to bond it to the layer below.  This art form engages artists from a wide variety of mediums, such as mixed media, photographers, printmakers, painters and more.  This class will focus on the basic techniques of encaustic painting including adding texture and line to your work, image transfers, basic collage, as well as fusing tools and setting up a studio workspace.  Students will get a taste of what is possible with this versatile medium.  All paints and panels are included with a supply fee of $35 payable to the instructor on the day of the workshop.

    This 2-day workshop is designed for the beginner & intermediate watercolorist.  Day one will concentrate on floral painting while day two will focus on landscape painting.  Learn the basic techniques while having fun and enjoying the mediums characteristics of fluidity, transparency and brilliance.  Composition, value scheme, color temperature and wetness will all be discussed.  Subjects will be approached in a a wet-on-wet technique.  The workshop includes demonstration, use of photo references and critique.  Photo references will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own reference materials.  The list of student supplied materials can be found HERE.

    Explore a multitude of traditional and natural dying techniques.  Work with the instructor to design and produce custom individual projects.  Each week we will explore a new dye and technique.  Finish by documenting your process and projects completed in class.  This class is a whirlwind in chemistry so be prepared for trial and error with great rewards!  Brin in wool, silk, cotton and linen fibers (raw, spun or woven).  Individualized meetings available upon request.  Optional supplies include sewing needles, patterns, or yarn needles for project based work.

    In this class, we will focus on the process and techniques that can be used to arrive at a suitable likeness of your subject.  "Suitable" can a realistic, abstract or stylized representation that communications the essence of a person you are painting.  We will talk about ways to see your subject in order to make this an easier task to achieve!  Using oil paints, through underpainting and working from general to specific, we will learn to arrive at our goals.  Pleas come to class with the required supplies and a reasonable sized, clear photograph of your subject.  We will cover some of the basics of color mixing and oil painting techniques, but previous experience with this is helpful, since it will allow more time to achieve the desired outcome!  Please see the online supply list for Oil Painting and Oil Painting Techniques to view required materials.  Or view it HERE.

    Bring in drawings, photographs, or other two-dimensional media to transfer onto fabrics and t-shirts.  Photograph, produce and set up and Etsy account to see your wears, or just five them to friends.  Print on paper to create posters, cards and printed media.  Review the step-by-step process in order to produce screen-printed work.  Use your time to design, layout and print your creations.  Instructor will help you to envision, plans and print your work.  Please bring an apron or smock and t-shirts you want to print on.  Inks are available at PrintLab for an additional cost.

    Explore the diversity of oil and cold wax to create richly layered abstracted paintings. Unlike encaustic, the wax is used at room temperature without heat. Using non-traditional tools, combine powdered pigments, oil bars, and other media along with the oil paint and wax medium to create depth, line and textured color fields. Learn through demonstrations, discussion and exploration. Discover the versatility of this medium through the experimental, intuitive nature of the class. Prerequisite: some experience in any medium.

    Always had an interest in painting the landscape?  Painting in and around Batavia is a wonderful way to enjoy the start of spring.  Join Kathy Hirsh for this two day workshop of oil painting or pastels.  Learn about setting up, planning a painting, edges, value and composition.  We will talk about underpainting, keeping it loose and playing with color.  These session are open to all, regardless of your level of experience.  Beginners are welcome.  If the weather is inclement, we will work at Water Street Studios from photos.  Please bring a few photographic references to inspire you.  WE will talk about how to successfully use a photographic reference and different issued of working from a photo.  See the supply list available HERE.
